FRIENDS OF MODERN ART FILM SERIES

March 4-5 (7:30 p.m.), March 6 (2 p.m.) – Budrus

(Israel-Palestine-U.S., 2010)  Directed by Julia Bacha, 82 min., subtitled, not rated

This documentary, lauded as “fine … humane” by the Chicago Tribune, follows a Palestinian man who unites various peoples in a non-violent protest movement on the West Bank.

March 11-12 (7:30 p.m.), March 13 (2 p.m.) – Animal Kingdom

(Australia, 2010)  Directed by David Michod, 113 min., rated R

In an explosive crime drama, a police detective tries to protect a teenage boy from a diabolical family led by his grandmother (Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver) and her trio of strange sons.

March 18-19 (7:30 p.m.), March 20 (2 p.m.) – Another Year

(United Kingdom, 2010)  Directed by Mike Leigh, 129 min., rated PG-13

Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen play an aging married couple who exist happily amid a group of less fulfilled friends and relatives. Leigh’s original screenplay earned an Oscar nomination.

March 25-26 (7:30 p.m.), March 27 (2 p.m.) — The Concert

(France-Italy-Russia, 2009)  Directed by Radu Mihaileanu, 119 min., subtitled, rated PG-13

Here’s an uplifting comedy about a true band of misfits: a Russian orchestra reunited after 30 years by its conductor, now a lowly janitor, for a concert in Paris.

March 10 (9 p.m.) — Fight Club

(U.S., 1999)  Directed by David Fincher, 139 min., rated R

Brad Pitt and Edward Norton co-star in the cult-favorite drama about an insomniac and a salesman who channel primal male aggression into a shocking new form of therapy.

March 17 (9 p.m.) – The Hidden Fortress

(Japan, 1958)  Directed by Akira Kurosawa, 139 min., subtitled, not rated

George Lucas has cited this Japanese adventure as a major influence on “Star Wars.” Two peasants escort a man and woman across enemy lines without knowing they are a princess and her general.

March 24 (9 p.m.) — The Vanishing

(U.S., 1993)  Directed by George Sluizer, 109 min., rated R

Long before his current Oscar hot streak, Jeff Bridges starred in this thriller about an abductor who decides to make himself known to the boyfriend (Kiefer Sutherland) of the victim.

March 31 (9 p.m.) — A Clockwork Orange

(United Kingdom-U.S., 1971)  Directed by Stanley Kubrick, 136 min., rated R

Kubrick’s adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ satirical sci-fi novel is a rite of passage for college-age film lovers. A youth (Malcolm McDowell) undergoes a controversial conditioning technique to “cure” his violent tendencies.
