World-champion cyclist excited about seeing bicycles on the bricks in Downtown Flint

Posted in Events, News on July 9, 2010 by Jared Field
_

FLINT, Michigan – In the summer of 1980, Sue Reber was in France chasing down a dream. Just a few months after the death of her father, the most decorated female cyclist in American history crossed the finish line to win her second world championship.

“My father was my mentor; to win in honor of him was special,” said Reber, a Flint native and one of the organizers of Le Champion Pave, a criterium race coming to Downtown Flint on July 25.

Reber, for all her hard work, achieved world-class status as a cyclist in relative obscurity in her home country, as the sport has been slower to catch on in America.

“Cycling in Europe is hugely popular,” Reber said. “Many people are not aware that cycling is second only to soccer in terms of world popularity. (In Europe) they get huge crowds to come out and watch the races, similar to what you get for football or baseball in this country.”

Reber wants to bring that level of excitement and interest in the sport to the city that helped shape her competitive drive. A city that’s long been known more for horsepower than manpower.

“We have a love affair with the automobile that takes precedence,” she said. “But we are beginning to see more and more people ride their bikes for recreation and transportation. It’s an everyday form of transportation for people in Europe … though it’s still relatively new in our area.”

For Reber, the marriage of the July 25 race to the well-known Maillot Jaune road race in Fenton could have a positive and long-lasting effect on Flint and Genesee County.

The Maillot Jaune in Fenton, a USA Cycling sanctioned race on a 13.5 mile road course, will get the weekend’s festivities kicked off on Saturday, July 24.

Le Champion Pave, named in honor of the late Albert Champion, a French cyclist and founder of Champion Ignition Company in Flint in 1908, will be in stark contrast to its sister road race. The 1-mile course in Flint’s burgeoning downtown district will test the skills of riders of all levels as they navigate the iconic bricks of Saginaw Street.

“I’m excited to be involved; I love to see events like this and positive things get showcased in this city,” said Reber, who has seen criterium races become signature events in cities on the east coast, a dream she envisions for Flint. “I’m proud to be from here. I want to see good things get the attention and notoriety in this state.”

And though it has not been easy, Reber has adjusted to her role as spectator; she’s looking forward to cheering on a new generation of riders.

“You dream when you’re a kid…and that was my dream,” she said. “I wanted to be an international competitor. But my racing days are long gone. I want to see them achieve their dreams.”

Both events are free for all spectators and are expected to become a fixture of summertime in Flint and Genesee County for years to come.
